Ah, sleep. That naturally blissful state where we slip from the waking world of troubles into a wondrous state of peaceful oblivion. Quality rest is an amazing thing and probably on a list somewhere of things people want to improve most in their lives. The problem is that sleep, the invigorating mistress that she is, is often as elusive as Shakespeare’s proverbial ‘Shrew. So, how do you get better sleep naturally?

Getting better rest naturally is a problem that plagues millions of Americans. The solution, more often than not, is a trip to the doctor’s office for a prescription of Ambien or Lunesta. But what if, let’s just pretend, that someone wanted to correct their problem without risking side effects? What would you do? How do I get better sleep naturally without risking my health in the process?

Sleep problems are an epidemic, and the worst part is that once a problem begins it can be difficult to correct. In fact, unless some sort of action is taken, you are more likely to continue to experience night after night of tossing and turning, frustrating, sleepless misery.

What are we to do then? Sacrifice future health on the altar of pharmaceutical drugs to have today what we will not need tomorrow?

The answer, like most things in life, is simple but not easy. To get better sleep naturally, you have to stop treating it like a comfortable old sweater and, instead, treat it like a new love. Sacrifice for it, change your routine, and start to build a new life around it.

To better rest at night, naturally, you have to understand that sleep is rhythm and routine.

Start by thinking back to the best snooze you have ever had in your life. What time did you go to bed? What time did you wake up? It is a good bet that by using this method you will be within 30 minutes of your natural rhythm. Achieving high-quality slumber, naturally, means linking up your schedule with the natural rhythm of your body. By understanding how to use the bodies’ own systems to get better sleep naturally you are promoting slumber that is restful and restoring.

Now, look at your routine. Is there any consistency in bedtime and waketime? If so, does it match the natural rhythm? Can the routine be changed to match the rhythm? Matching natural rhythm and creating consistency will help you live your best sleep life without having to use sleep aids. Not only will building a routine around natural rhythm improve sleep quality, but it will also help you fall asleep faster.

Sleep is often overcomplicated. By making a sleep schedule and exploring natural rhythm, you may find that it becomes a new love, instead of arch-nemesis, and getting better sleep naturally is no longer an impossible dream.
